Club Assembly
Surprise Visitors
Budget Talk
Future Planning

What a wonderful and productive meeting we had today—full of energy, meaningful discussion, and exciting plans for the months ahead!

We kicked things off with Happy Dollars, with special thoughts sent to those impacted by the recent tragedy in Texas. And just as we were settling in, we had a surprise guest—Kevin Raymond walked through the door, bringing big smiles all around!

Pam Gray also joined us with updates from the District. We’ll now be receiving regular, weekly updates from Emma Bodwell, (District Governor) and Pam encouraged us all to visit other clubs whenever possible to stay connected and inspired. Be sure to mark your calendars—Pam and Emma will be visiting our club on August 15.

We’re also going on some field trips! Our first will be a visit to White Pine Programs sometime in August (date TBD), and the second will be on September 19, during our regular meeting time, to the top of Mount Agamenticus, where we’ll hear from the Friends of Mt. A. Other possible outings include the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard or a local favorite—Stonewall Kitchen. If you have other ideas, we’re all ears!

On the PR front, we’re putting together a committee to help raise our visibility around town. We’re talking about new signs in key locations (like in front of the CAL building and along Route 1A), as well as directional signs from Ogunquit and Kittery. Thank you to Heather, who helped us apply for a nonprofit Google Workspace so we can store and share documents easily.

We’re proud to be a sponsor of the York Climate Action “Party at the Point”, which is scheduled for August 3rd at the Viewpoint Hotel on the Nubble.   Larry reminded us of the Window Dressers build happening in Wells this December. He’ll begin measuring windows in September around York and is looking for volunteers to help.

Darcy reminded us that the WHY Survey we discussed last week will be coming out soon. Susan also rediscovered an old gem—an inspiring poster board titled “What Makes You Rotary Happy?” We’re also starting a new initiative: publicly posting thank-you notes, which will also be included in the weekly update emails.

We voted on three funding proposals today, all of which passed:
  1. $1,000 to support the Guatemala Literacy Project .
  2. $1,500 to sponsor a teacher through the Life and Hope Haiti organization.
  3. A $1,000 pledge to the Sanford/Springvale Club, led by Elias Thomas for their 16th water dam project in India—a transformative effort that has already enabled three crop cycles, supported livestock, and generated income. Our pledge is part of a larger $110,000 global grant goal, with $20,000 coming from the District.
Darcy explained that today’s votes were grouped together as a reflection of our club’s shared responsibility in allocating charitable funds. The idea is to ensure transparency and involvement as we shape our budget priorities for the year.

Speaking of the budget—Darcy is finalizing the proposed numbers and invites feedback from all members before the final vote at our August Club Assembly. Key points include:
  • $67,479 total projected budget. (includes proceeds from Four on the 4th, Car with a Cause and a surprise donation in the amount of $3,000 from the parents of Barbara Mailing)
  • 65% allocated to local efforts, 30% international, and 5% yet to be determined.
  • Annual commitments like scholarships remain top priorities
    .
We also discussed membership and cost barriers. Darcy suggested covering ClubRunner, domain fees, state filing fees, and the $1,153 storage expense from charitable funds rather than member dues—something other clubs have already begun doing.

To boost our community image, there’s a proposal to increase the PR budget to $5,000. A new postcard-style promotional flyer is ready—just awaiting approval, funding and printing.

Looking ahead, Darcy hopes to launch a major club project this year involving both money and hands-on service. One exciting idea is a York Community Fridge at the Parks & Recreation building, similar to the Kittery Seacoast Fridge, possibly in partnership with YCSA. And did you know? York High School seniors currently don’t have a senior service project—maybe we can help fill that gap.

Please take some time to review the proposed budget when it’s circulated and send your questions or suggestions directly to Darcy. Your voice matters, and we want everyone to be involved.

Until next week—thank you for all you do and for keeping the Rotary spirit strong!

Also, just in-  Club Member Richard DeSoto will be performing at the Short Sands Gazebo on Saturday, August 9, 2025 from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm.  Add it to your calendar ~ It should be a FUN TIME!!!
