Legacy Letter
August Car with a Cause Early Bird Drawing

This week we welcomed guest speaker Jay Sherwin, who introduced us to the art of writing a Legacy Letter. Unlike a legal will, a legacy letter—also called an ethical will—is a heartfelt personal statement meant to be shared with family and friends. It’s a way to reflect on your life story, express gratitude, pass along values, share lessons learned, and offer gentle blessings or advice for future generations.
Jay outlined six core elements to consider when crafting a legacy letter:
  1. Introduction – Identify your audience.
  2. Tell your story – Share meaningful experiences.
  3. Express your values – Connect your stories with what defines you.
  4. Gratitude – Name who and what you are thankful for.
  5. Regrets – Be honest and reflective about lessons learned.
  6. Blessings & guidance – Offer wisdom, encouragement, and hopes for loved ones.
He also shared practical ideas for preserving these letters, such as adding photos or artwork, or creating a keepsake box. You can learn more about Jay’s work and courses at www.jaysherwin.com
Kindness $ this week and for the month of September will be directed to Maine Needs, a nonprofit serving vulnerable communities across the state.
