Rotary Foundation Endowment – Russ Peterson

Russ Peterson shared an inspiring example of Rotary impact through personal giving. He and his wife Susan established an endowment fund supporting Peace and Reconciliation through the Rotary Foundation, with an initial donation of $25,000.

Their contributions have grown the fund to approximately $40,000, which now generates about $1,000 annually in funding that can support Rotary initiatives such as a Paul Harris Fellow each year.

Russ emphasized that creating a lasting impact through Rotary giving does not have to wait for the future—Rotarians can support causes they care about during their lifetime while watching their impact grow.

Guest Speaker – Representative Holly Sargent

York Rotary was honored to welcome State Representative Holly Sargent, who represents House District 127, to share insights from her work in Augusta.

Holly described Maine’s citizen legislature, explaining that lawmakers serve part-time two-year terms with term limits that allow a maximum of eight consecutive years. While this system keeps government closely connected to everyday citizens, it also presents challenges in maintaining expertise while reviewing the roughly 2,000 bills introduced every two years.

She spoke candidly about the complex realities of policymaking, including:
  • Limited staffing and resources for legislators
  • The growing influence of advocacy groups and policy experts
  • Increasing political polarization
  • The importance of finding bipartisan solutions and moderate voices
Despite the challenges, Holly shared that she loves the work and feels honored to serve the York community. She also expressed appreciation for the values Rotary represents and noted that once her legislative term concludes in April, she looks forward to spending more time back with the club.

Closing Thought

As Darcy reminded members at the close of the morning, Rotary’s work continues to be guided by a simple but powerful message:

“Be the Good.”
